Projects Personal Vault

A December 5 project

Personal Vault

Your World. Your Vault.

A gold-lit vault door surrounded by blue and gold circuitry.

Why?

Our digital lives are scattered everywhere.

Photographs in one service. Movies in another. Music somewhere else. Documents, emails, personal videos — all spread across different applications, platforms and subscriptions.

And the frustrating part? We don't always have control over any of it.

A film you've been meaning to watch suddenly disappears from Netflix because a licensing agreement has expired. A photo application decides how your pictures should be organised, but won't let you assign a person to a photograph when its automatic recognition fails. Features you want don't exist, features you don't want are forced upon you, and sometimes the only solution is to find yet another application.

We've become so accustomed to this that we rarely question it.

Even in the self-hosting community, people ask which application they should use for photos, which one for movies, which one for music.

I think we're asking the wrong questions.

Why should I have to organise my digital life around the applications I use? Why can't one application organise itself around my digital life?

That's where Personal Vault began.

I wanted one place for my digital possessions. Not a collection of unrelated applications hidden behind a dashboard, but one coherent system that understands different kinds of content and treats them as parts of the same digital life.

Photographs, movies, music, documents, email and whatever comes next. One application, one home, with the freedom to decide how things should work.

What started as a relatively simple idea has grown into something far more ambitious. And it's still evolving.

But the underlying principle hasn't changed:

My digital life should not have to adapt to somebody else's software. The software should adapt to me.

And if the software I want doesn't exist?

I'll build it.

My way. Or no way.

Not because everyone else should do things my way, but because I refuse to accept that the way things have always been done is necessarily the way they should be.

Your World. Your Vault.

A future experience

Step inside, in time.

An interactive demonstration of Personal Vault is planned for a future phase.

Demo coming in a future phase.

Technical explanations, architectural decisions and development stories will find a home here.

Stories still to come.

The technical articles are a future chapter.
